Province: SaltaColome Malbec Autentico 2014
Subregion: Upper Calchaqui Valley
Grapes: 100% Malbec
Deep, dark, dense, glass-staining, as purple as Queen Elizabeth’s coronation robes – this malbec from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines more than 7,500 feet in altitude makes an impression before the first sniff. And what a sniff! The nose carries cedar, smoke, winter spices, and a touch of latex – an array of aromas virtuall unique among malbecs. In the mouth the wine is chewy, with an initial burst of sweet blackberry jam that soon diverges into tangy high notes and bitter low notes, with the berries receding in between. The tannins are present but not overly aggressive, which is rather miraculous for a wine aged exclusively in steel tanks. A marvel to be sought after, for now only at restaurants.
