Province: SaltaEl Porvenir Amauta Corte I Inspiracion 2013
Grapes: 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah
Aging: 6 to 8 months in French and American oak
With heavy oak apparent just from the color and nose, the stakes are high here before even taking a sip. Fortunately, this blend delivers – and how. Rich, spicy, marshy, and sweet by turns, it’s simply one of the most exciting wines to come out of Argentina in recent years. The depth and smoothness are stunning for a relatively young wine, and the range of flavor feels a bit like watching a parade in fast-forward: blackberry syrup, chili, seaweed, and tea flash by in quick succession, and then something completely unexpected like citronella pops up in the finish. Drink on its own to appreciate the variety, then try with foods ranging from traditional game to Southeast Asian.
