Province: MendozaGimenez Riili Joyas de Familia Gran Blend 2011

Grapes: 45% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot

Aging: 25 months in new French oak

What a way to kick things off – a bracing bouquet laced with fresh-cut pine and water lily, the latter of which is present in the mouth as well, fortunately without becoming sickly sweet. From the opaque depths of the glass, unexpected lighter flavors like peach and pear also mingle with traditional notes of black cherry and anise. This wine truly shows what some of Mendoza’s many red varieties can do in the hands of a skilled blender like Pablo Martorell. Thanks to its long stay in oak barrels, it should develop wonderfully for years to come.

Available directly from the winery and in stores from 2014.
