Aging: 12 months in French oak (30% new)

Think pinots all have mild bouquets? Think again – this one, a boutique product from Laura Catena, grabs you with powerful aromas of apple peel, tanned leather and coffee grounds. Its pinot vines may be some of the highest in the world, at 4,700 feet! But the wine itself is light and citric, offset by a heavy dose of oak with a bitter note of burnt caramel. The flavors linger long enough, yet they could be more attractive.
